On behalf of NHS Highland, we are seeking a locum vascular surgeon to restore services. If you’re available for a locum placement, we’d welcome a confidential conversation.
Concerns
- Patients now face journeys of 200+ miles (2–5 hours) to Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, or Glasgow for vascular care—a burden for those requiring life-saving interventions.
- Vascular services remain critically limited, with the health board unable to confirm if arterial operations are being performed locally.
- The region relies on partnerships with other Scottish Health Boards, but long-term solutions are urgently needed to rebuild local capacity.
About the Role
- Locum Consultant Vascular Surgeon with potential for flexible terms.
- Lead and stabilize vascular services for the entire Highlands region, ensuring patients receive timely, high-quality care close to home.
- Address a diverse caseload (aortic aneurysms, diabetic foot disease, vascular trauma, etc.) in a supportive, multidisciplinary environment.
- Opportunity to shape redesigned vascular pathways in collaboration with NHS Highland and Scottish Government initiatives.
- The role will involve working 9-17, Mon – Fri, without oncall cover
Why Step In?
- Immediate impact: Your work will prevent vulnerable patients from enduring exhausting travel for essential care.
- Professional recognition: As noted by MSP Edward Mountain, the outgoing surgeon was widely praised by staff and patients—this is a chance to build on that legacy.
- Lifestyle benefits: The Highlands offer an unparalleled quality of life, with stunning landscapes and a welcoming community.
